“I Now Pay ₦500 to Berger” — Tinubu Shares Commuter’s Experience After Fare Reduction

A commuter identified as Blessing has said she now pays ₦500 to travel from Masaka to Berger in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), down from ₦1,500 previously.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shared her account in a post on his official X account, highlighting the reported reduction in transport costs associated with compressed natural gas (CNG) transportation.

According to the account shared by Tinubu, Blessing’s new fare saves her ₦1,000 per trip, leaving her with more money for household expenses and other daily needs.

The President also mentioned Ada and Abigail, who reportedly pay ₦1,600 for the journey from Enugu to Nsukka instead of ₦4,000, saving ₦2,400 per trip.

Tinubu also shared the experience of Kabir, a taxi driver who said ₦10,000 worth of CNG allows him to complete three more return trips than drivers using petrol. The President said the driver had no intention of switching back to petrol.

He further stated that some commuters in Borno pay as little as ₦50 per trip using CNG-powered and electric vehicles.

Tinubu said the experiences illustrated his administration’s aim of lowering transportation costs by reducing operating expenses for drivers and making fares more affordable for passengers.

He acknowledged that removing the petrol subsidy had created financial difficulties for many households, adding that the government had a responsibility to provide practical alternatives to ease the burden.

Blessing’s reported reduction from ₦1,500 to ₦500 was one of the examples Tinubu highlighted in making the case for greater use of CNG and electric vehicles in public transportation.
