I Know Where You Live: Magistrate Flees Home After Alleged Threats as Milimani Court Denies Man Bond

A Milimani court has denied bond to a 40-year-old man accused of threatening a magistrate through text messages and WhatsApp, with the prosecution citing concerns over the judicial officer’s safety.

Francis Kamau Karanja appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Irene Thamara, who ruled that the prosecution had presented compelling reasons to justify keeping him in custody as the case proceeds.

The court heard that the alleged threats had left the complainant fearing for her safety, forcing her to leave her residence and stop using her personal vehicle. She reportedly now visits her home only occasionally as a security precaution.

According to the prosecution, Karanja allegedly sent the messages on the evening of September 28, 2026. The messages reportedly accused the magistrate of being biased in a case involving Gabriel Saka and warned her to be careful, with the sender allegedly claiming to know where she lived.

The prosecution argued that the wording of the messages was likely to cause fear or apprehension of violence, raising concerns about the magistrate’s personal security.

Following the incident, the magistrate reported the matter at Kibera Police Station, prompting investigations that led to Karanja’s arrest.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution maintained that the nature of the allegations warranted caution, particularly because the complainant is a judicial officer. The court considered the reported impact of the threats on her movements and personal security when determining whether to grant bond.

Karanja denied the charge against him. He will return to court on October 14, 2026, for a pre-trial mention as the case moves to the next stage.

The ruling highlights concerns surrounding the safety of judicial officers and the potential consequences of alleged threats against members of the judiciary.

Karanja remains in custody following the court’s decision. The allegations against him have yet to be determined, and the case will proceed through the judicial process.
