How Messi Performed Against DC United After Argentina Farewell

According to a report by BBC Sport on October 11, 2026, Lionel Messi marked his first appearance since ending his international career with an outstanding performance, scoring twice as Inter Miami defeated DC United 4-0 in Major League Soccer.

The Argentine superstar found the net twice in the second half, helping Miami secure only their second victory in 11 league matches. His performance came just four days after he scored in his final appearance for Argentina, bringing an end to a remarkable international career.

Inter Miami had already established control before Messi took centre stage, with former Barcelona and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez scoring twice in the opening 45 minutes. Suarez opened the scoring in the third minute with a powerful left-footed finish before doubling his tally six minutes before the interval.

Messi increased Miami’s advantage shortly after the restart, finishing a move created by Suarez in the 47th minute. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner then struck again in the 60th minute, completing his brace and sealing an emphatic victory for the hosts.

The 39-year-old remains the leading scorer in MLS this season, with 23 goals, four ahead of FC Dallas forward Petar Musa. His attention now turns fully to club football as Miami pursue the opportunity to win consecutive league titles.

Messi recently concluded his Argentina career after recording 126 goals in 208 appearances, becoming his country’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player. He also captained the national team to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.

Despite the convincing win, Miami remain second in the Eastern Conference, 14 points behind leaders Nashville FC. Messi’s latest display, however, offered a timely boost as the club continues its push for another MLS title.
