Horror as person dies after being pulling out to sea as monster waves sweep California

A person died after drowning in the ocean at a Southern California beach Sunday morning as powerful waves battered the coast.

Los Angeles Fire Department crews rushed to the 6900 block of Pacific Avenue in Playa del Rey around 8:18  a.m. following reports of a person in distress in the water, officials said.

The incident was initially reported as an ocean drowning, according to the fire department.

The victim was an adult male, officials told The California Post. No foul play was suspected.

Los Angeles County lifeguards attempted to save the man by performing CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials confirmed.

It comes as wild weather rocked Southern California over the weekend as the remains of Hurricane Rachel sent huge waves into coastal towns.

In Long Beach, powerful waves tore through wooden slats along the historic waterfront boardwalk, with seawater breaching the remaining structure ahead of Saturday night’s high tide, video shows.

By Saturday evening, the battered boardwalk had become inaccessible, with officials posting “No trespassing” signs as crews scrambled to shore up vulnerable areas before more damaging waves arrived.

Eight structures along the city’s Peninsula have been red-tagged as unsafe to enter, while another was yellow-tagged, allowing residents limited access to retrieve belongings but prohibiting occupancy until the property is deemed safe, Mayor Rex Richardson said.

Meanwhile, in the Inland Empire footage showed a structure being ripped from the ground as two people desperately tried to stop it from being blown away by powerful winds.
