Govt notifies proclamation of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The President has proclaimed emergency in KP under the constitution’s Articles 232 and 234.

The presidential proclamation of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa comes into effect forthwith.

According to the gazette notification, the emergency has been proclaimed over an alarming increase in terrorism and acts of violence in KP.

Terror attacks in KP pose serious threat to life and property in the province, while the attacks on the government installations and the law enforcement agencies have also been increased.

“Provincial government has failed to curb effectively terrorism threats,” as per the notification.

“The Governor’s report has also pointed out the failure of the constitutional system in the province”.

“The situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was beyond the control of the provincial government,” as per the proclamation.

The situation in the province was declared a threat to the overall security of Pakistan.

According to the notification, the federal government could direct the Governor KP to assume the provincial government’s authority. “The Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could perform the duties delegated by the federal government”, notification read.

It allows the Parliament or its designated authority to exercise certain legislative powers of the provincial assembly and allows the Federal Government to assume certain provincial functions during the emergency.

The chief minister of KP, ministers, advisers, assistants and the advocate general will no more remain in their offices, according to the notification.
