Ghanaian teen David Kwarteng sets record at WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship
Black Starlets midfielder David Kwarteng has made history at the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship by scoring the first goal of the 2026 tournament in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Kwarteng scored in the seventh minute of Ghana’s opening Group A match against Togo on Saturday, October 10, at the August 4 Sports Stadium. His goal gave the Black Starlets a 1-0 win and a strong start to their campaign.
The goal came from a set-piece move started by Abdul Latif Wunzalgu. After the free-kick was blocked, captain Abdul Rafiu Issah made another attempt before Kwarteng seized the chance and scored.
His early goal proved to be the winner as Ghana held on to claim all three points. It also made him the first player to score at this year’s tournament.
The victory moved the Black Starlets to the top of Group A after hosts Burkina Faso and Benin played out a goalless draw in the other group match.
Kwarteng’s goal has given Ghana a positive start as they aim to qualify for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations through the regional tournament.
The Black Starlets will play their next group match against Benin on Tuesday, October 13. Kwarteng and his teammates will hope to continue their winning run in Ouagadougou.
