The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed power outages affecting parts of the Ashanti Region to a technical fault at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP), highlighting the challenge of maintaining reliable electricity supply while network repairs and upgrades continue.

In a public notice issued on Sunday, October 11, 2026, the power distributor said engineers were working to rectify the fault and restore electricity to affected customers.

However, ECG did not identify the specific communities experiencing the outage or provide a timeline for the restoration of supply.

The disruption comes amid wider efforts to improve electricity distribution infrastructure and reduce the frequency of planned interruptions in Ashanti.

While maintenance is necessary to strengthen the network, unexpected faults present a separate challenge, requiring rapid repairs and timely communication with customers.

ECG identified the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point as the source of the current disruption, but did not disclose the technical nature of the problem or its extent.

“The Electricity Company of Ghana wishes to inform our cherished customers and the general public in the Ashanti Region that the outage being experienced across parts of the Region is as a result of a technical challenge at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP).”

The company said its engineers were working to resolve the fault, assuring customers that efforts were under way to restore supply.

“ECG wishes to assure affected customers that our Engineers are working to rectify the fault and restore supply.”

Although the assurance indicates that repair work is in progress, the absence of a restoration estimate leaves households and businesses uncertain about the duration of the disruption.

The consequences can extend beyond inconvenience. Businesses that depend on electricity for refrigeration, production, digital transactions and other daily operations may face additional costs when supply is interrupted. For households, prolonged outages can disrupt domestic activities and access to essential services.

The lack of information on the affected communities, the number of customers involved and the anticipated restoration time also limits the public’s ability to plan around the outage.

The latest disruption comes as ECG works to balance network maintenance and upgrades with the need to keep customers connected.

The company has outlined efforts to reduce planned power interruptions in Ashanti, including limiting scheduled outages to two days a week and seeking to avoid repeatedly interrupting the same electricity feeders.

Such measures are intended to reduce the burden on customers while allowing engineers to undertake essential work on the distribution network.

However, the Anwomaso incident highlights the difference between planned maintenance and unexpected technical failures.

Scheduled interruptions can be communicated in advance, giving households and businesses time to prepare. Fault-related outages, by contrast, require rapid diagnosis, repairs and regular updates on restoration progress.

Reducing planned interruptions will therefore address only part of the reliability challenge. ECG must also ensure that faults are resolved promptly and that infrastructure improvements translate into fewer disruptions and shorter restoration periods.

ECG has also announced maintenance works affecting parts of Greater Accra, Tema, the Eastern Region and the Volta Region between October 12 and 16.

The scheduled works form part of the company’s wider maintenance activities and are separate from the fault at Anwomaso. The available information does not establish that the Ashanti outage is connected to these planned interruptions.

The maintenance programme illustrates the continuing operational demands on the power distributor as it seeks to improve network performance across the country.

While planned outages can cause short-term inconvenience, the intended benefit is to maintain or improve the infrastructure required for dependable electricity delivery.

The effectiveness of the programme will ultimately depend on whether the work addresses network weaknesses and reduces the frequency and duration of future interruptions.

For customers affected by the Anwomaso fault, the immediate priority is the restoration of electricity. ECG has confirmed that engineers are working to resolve the problem but has not provided a timeframe for full restoration.

The incident also highlights the importance of clear communication during unexpected outages.

Identifying affected communities, updating customers on repair progress and providing realistic restoration estimates would help households and businesses manage the disruption.

ECG has apologised for the inconvenience caused, but the broader test will be whether it can restore supply promptly and strengthen the network against similar failures.

As the company pursues efforts to reduce planned outages and improve electricity distribution, the Anwomaso disruption underscores a parallel requirement: ensuring that unexpected technical faults do not leave customers facing prolonged uncertainty over when power will return.
