Don’t Want To Watch? Don’t: Mullin Shrugs Off Outcry Over Fort Hood Shooter’s Livestreamed Execution

0Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne MullinHomeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the administration’s plan to broadcast the upcoming execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, pushing back on warnings that a public broadcast could aid terrorist propaganda.

Appearing Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Mullin addressed the Pentagon’s decision announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to livestream Hasan’s execution by firing squad.

When asked if broadcasting the event risks turning Hasan into a martyr and creating a security threat, Mullin dismissed the concern.

“No one has to watch it if they don’t choose to,” Mullin said.

Brennan noted that lawmakers, including Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Kevin Cramer, have warned that a public broadcast provides terrorists with the global platform they seek.

Mullin said the Department of Homeland Security does not view the broadcast as an increased threat to national security.

“We weigh the risk every single day in this country. Department of Homeland Security, that’s what we do is we protect the homeland,” Mullin said. “I don’t see an elevated risk at this point at all because of this.”

Hasan was convicted and sentenced to death for the November 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, which killed 13 people and injured more than 30 others.

Mullin reiterated his support for the execution, stating that the public nature of the sentence serves as a deterrent.

“I think people need to understand if you attack America, we will come after you and we will make sure that the punishment fits the crime,” Mullin said. “In this case, he killed 13 individuals on Fort Hood. I have no sympathy for him, and I give absolutely zero thought to the way that this man dies.”
