DA: Man who died after he was shot by police in Stoughton tried to hit pedestrians with his car
The man who died after he was shot by police in Stoughton early Saturday morning had attempted to hit numerous pedestrians with his car, investigators have announced, nearly 24 hours after the shooting.
According to the Norfolk District Attorney's Office, the shooting occurred on Monk Street, near the intersection with Route 138.
Investigators identified the man involved in the incident as 32-year-old Salaheddine Yagoub, who had no known address.
Police radio traffic reviewed by NewsCenter 5 indicates a chaotic scene involving a man, who may have been armed, and reports that a vehicle was involved.
Videos provided by witnesses to NewsCenter 5 show an apparent argument involving several people in the area. At one point, a vehicle backs up rapidly around the corner and strikes a parked car. When police arrive with flashing lights, the car drives away around the corner.
A second video appears to show first responders performing emergency first aid after the shooting.
"It's not something you expect to see from the window of your apartment," said witness Sarah Breen.
While the DA's office confirmed that the man was shot by police, it did not identify the man or the officers involved.
On Saturday, fishhook probes from a Taser were still under a red SUV parked in the area. Bullet holes could also be found on the vehicle.
"I don't know, I can't tell you if the person had a weapon or anything. I do know they had their arm out like this when they were walking," said Breen.
The case is now under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit.
The Public House, which is located on Monk Street, said it played no role in the incident but would not be opening for business on Saturday. In a statement, the business praised the actions of three staff members for helping to keep patrons calm and handle the scary situation.
The Public House plans to reopen on Sunday at noon.
