Children of South African Billionaires who hardly make noise (Opinion)
South Africa’s wealthiest families often appear in the headlines, yet many of their children choose to stay out of the spotlight. While their parents built large business empires, the next generation frequently prefers quieter lives focused on work, investment or philanthropy rather than constant media attention. Here is a look at some of the children of the country’s best-known billionaires who tend to keep a low profile.
Nicky Oppenheimer, former chairman of De Beers, is one of South Africa’s most prominent mining heirs. He and his wife Strilli have a son, Jonathan Oppenheimer.
Jonathan has largely avoided the celebrity circuit. He worked at NM Rothschild & Sons, later at Anglo American, and spent many years in senior roles at De Beers in Southern Africa and London. In 2016 he founded Oppenheimer Partners, an investment firm focused on long-term opportunities. He is also known for philanthropic work and maintains a relatively private public presence compared with many other wealthy heirs.
Johann Rupert, chairman of Swiss luxury group Richemont and a key figure in the Rupert family businesses, is often described as private himself. His children — Anton Rupert Jr, Caroline Rupert and Hanneli Rupert — are likewise rarely in the tabloid spotlight.
They are linked to the family’s extensive interests in luxury goods, finance and other investments, yet they generally stay away from high-profile social media or entertainment coverage. The family’s wealth and influence remain significant, but the younger generation appears to prefer a lower public profile.
Mining billionaire Patrice Motsepe and his wife, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, have three children: Kgosi, Thlopie and Kabelo Motsepe.
Unlike some children of high-profile figures, they are not regularly featured in lifestyle or gossip stories. The Motsepe family is known for business success and philanthropy through the Motsepe Foundation, and the children have largely stayed out of the constant media glare that surrounds their parents.
These examples show that large inherited wealth does not always lead to a public lifestyle. Many children of South African billionaires focus on business, education or private interests and choose not to seek the limelight. Their quieter approach stands in contrast to the more visible celebrity culture that often surrounds money and success.
