Black Clover Season 2 episode 2 recap: Does Yuno defeat Zeno and does the Underworld gate finally open?

Black Clover is the long-running series created by Yūki Tabata. The manga started in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2015 and wrapped up earlier this year after moving to Jump GIGA. Studio Pierrot adapted it into an anime that ran from 2017 to 2021 before a long break.

Season 2 finally returned on 3 October 2026 on TV Tokyo in Japan and Crunchyroll worldwide, with Ayataka Tanemura directing. Episode 2, titled “The Door to Hell,” aired on 10 October.

The main cast is largely the same as before. Gakuto Kajiwara voices Asta, Nobunaga Shimazaki plays Yuno, and Junichi Suwabe returns as Yami. For this episode the key voices include Junko Minagawa as Mereoleona Vermillion, Daisuke Namikawa as Jack the Ripper, Hiro Shimono as Nacht Faust, Tatsuhisa Suzuki as Zenon Zogratis, Yū Kobayashi as Charlotte Roselei, Yui Ogura as Vanica Zogratis, and Rikiya Koyama as Dante Zogratis.

The season picks up the Spade Kingdom raid after the first episode set up the infiltration.

The episode opens with the situation outside the castle still messy. Morris has summoned a giant ancient demon in the Spade Kingdom, and Mereoleona is the one stuck dealing with it. She starts in the lava, which is very on-brand for her, and quickly realises her first attack is not enough. The demon survives it.

She switches into Hellfire Incarnate and pushes her Mana Zone further. We see her combine that with Calidos Brachium Purgatory: Abyss. It is the sort of sequence where Mereoleona just overwhelms the thing through raw power and control rather than any complicated plan.

By the end of her section she has conquered the demon. It is a clean win, but it also shows how much of the Magic Knights’ strength is being spent just keeping the outside situation from collapsing while the main team is inside.

This fight runs parallel to everything else. The Resistance is still involved, and Commander Albert gets a moment rallying people by pointing out that Yuno looks like the former Spade royals, King Loyce and Queen Ciel. It adds a bit of context to why Yuno’s presence matters here, even if the episode does not dig into it.

Inside the castle the Magic Knights split into groups. Yuno goes with Langris specifically for Zenon, because Zenon is the one who took William Vangeance. The personal stakes are clear. Yuno is still alive thanks to William’s spell, and he makes that plain when they arrive.

Zenon is as confident as ever. He uses his spatial magic to shut down Langris’s attacks and boasts that nobody can force him to take a single step back. Yuno answers by calling Bell and going into Spirit Dive: Spirit of Boreas. The episode uses the Black Rover insert song during the transformation, which is a nice callback.

What stands out is that Yuno keeps control of the mana even inside Zenon’s Mana Zone. Zenon notices and comments that mana itself seems to favour Yuno. Yuno breaks through the bone defences and drives an attack through Zenon’s chest. He forces Zenon to actually retreat a step. It is not a full defeat.

Zenon is still standing and the fight is not finished, but it is the first time in this arc that Yuno has properly pushed him. After watching the Golden Dawn get destroyed and William get taken right in front of him, this sequence feels like the direct response fans were waiting for.

The other two fights run at the same time. Charlotte and Rill face Vanica. Vanica is still host to Megicula, the devil behind Charlotte’s curse, so the matchup is personal. Charlotte has been training with the Heart Kingdom’s Rune Arrays. She has modified her own curse into an anti-curse spell.

In the episode she uses True Briar Magic: Queen of Briars / Blue Rose Paradise to trap Vanica in thorns that grow stronger the more curse power Vanica throws at them. Vanica ends up buried in them. It is a smart use of the thing that used to hold Charlotte back, and it stops Vanica from easily controlling the fight.

Jack and Nacht take Dante. Dante’s gravity and regeneration make him difficult. Nacht goes into Devil Union with Slotos (Equus form) mainly for defence so Jack can get an opening.

Jack remembers his hunting past and his drive for stronger opponents after his father’s death. He summons blades that can cut gravity itself and lands a wound across Dante’s chest that does not regenerate right away.

Both of these fights give the captains clear moments of growth. Charlotte finally turns her curse into an advantage, and Jack gets to show the kind of adaptive cutting magic that fits his character. On the surface the Magic Knights look like they are winning all three internal fights.

Yuno does not fully defeat Zenon in this episode. He wounds him badly and forces him to take a step back with Spirit of Boreas, but Zenon is still in the fight. The other groups also gain the upper hand against Vanica and Dante. Those results do not stop the larger plan.

Nacht realises Morris has accelerated the Tree of Qliphoth. Morris used devil power to extract knowledge from Lolopechka and used it to push the ritual forward. The first gate to the Underworld opens. Two high-ranking twin devils, Lilith and Naamah, come through and appear near Nacht and Jack. The Magic Knights thought they still had time before the gate opened. That window closes while they are still separated and busy with the Dark Triad.

The episode ends with the gate open, demons starting to come out, and Asta still off training with Liebe under Gimodelo’s guidance. Noelle is not in the main action either. It is a classic Black Clover move. The supporting cast gets real spotlight moments and individual wins, then the bigger threat jumps ahead of them.

The individual victories matter, especially Yuno’s response to Zenon and Charlotte’s handling of her curse, but they are temporary. The Dark Triad remain, and high-ranking devils are now on the field. The raid has not failed yet, but the original plan to stop the gate before it opens has already fallen apart.

Black Clover Season 2 is streaming now on Crunchyroll. New episodes release weekly.
