Big Push Roads Could Unlock Affordable Housing Outside Accra – SHC Boss
The State Housing Company (SHC) has declared that the government’s Big Push programme could be the game-changer that makes housing outside central Accra both accessible and affordable for the everyday Ghanaian worker.
Speaking at the open house ceremony for SHC’s newly completed 195-unit Surge Homes project at Amrahia, Managing Director John Sheriff Bawah emphasised that housing delivery and transport infrastructure must move forward together. According to him, it is not enough to build beautiful homes if workers cannot easily reach their jobs in the city.
“The Big Push programme is not just about roads; it is about connecting people to opportunity,” Mr. Bawah stated. He explained that improved road networks would cut commuting times, reduce transport costs, and open up areas like Amrahia as realistic residential options for thousands of workers currently squeezed into expensive accommodation in central Accra.
The Surge Homes project itself stands as proof of the company’s commitment to bridging Ghana’s housing deficit. The 195 units feature modern designs tailored to meet the needs of young professionals, growing families, and middle-income earners. Buyers at the ceremony expressed excitement about finally owning homes that combine comfort with the promise of future connectivity.
Mr. Bawah revealed that SHC is already eyeing similar projects in other peri-urban communities, but insisted that government’s road expansion drive remains critical to their success. He praised President Mahama’s administration for recognising the link between infrastructure and housing.
Industry watchers agree that the synergy between SHC’s housing push and the Big Push roads agenda could transform Ghana’s property landscape. With better roads, land values outside Accra will rise, but so too will the number of Ghanaians who can finally afford a decent place to call home.
