Bechem To Be Named Chicken Capital In Ghana, Mahama Hints, Ghanaians React

President John Dramani Mahama has projected that Bechem, in the Ahafo Region, could become Ghana’s chicken capital once its poultry and meat processing factory becomes operational.

The President made the remarks on October 10, 2026, during an engagement with residents and stakeholders, wearing a hard hat and reflective vest. His comments, first reported by Citi Newsroom, point to a vision of positioning the town as a hub for poultry production and processing.

As of October 11, 2026, reactions continue to flow online, with the announcement drawing sustained attention across social media. Public sentiment has been varied, blending humour, curiosity and serious reflection.

A large share of the conversation has been light-hearted. Many users have found the “chicken capital” idea amusing and have responded with wit and playful commentary, reflecting the public’s tendency to engage with national issues through humour.

Others have taken a more thoughtful view. Some see the proposal as a sign of a broader push towards industrial specialisation, in which towns and regions are associated with particular products or industries. Supporters believe this approach could stimulate local economies, attract investment and strengthen value chains.

A smaller but notable group has approached the announcement with measured optimism. Their interest centres on the practical side of the project, including its benefits for local communities and whether it can be sustained once operational.

Overall, the reaction suggests a public that is engaged and interested in how local industrialisation plans translate into real opportunities.

The factory’s completion and successful operation will determine whether Bechem earns the title the President has hinted at. For now, the town has moved firmly into the national conversation, and the debate shows no sign of slowing.
