Top Lawyer Caught Driving at 222km/h on N2 — See What the Court Ordered Him to Pay
A 32-year-old lawyer from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape has been fined R40,000 after being caught driving at 222km/h in a zone where the speed limit is 120km/h on the N2 highway. The incident occurred during a routine traffic operation carried out by KwaZulu-Natal’s Road Traffic Inspectorate near Scottburgh.
Monde Nzima, the lawyer involved, did not stop when initially signaled by officers, leading to a short pursuit before he was detained. He appeared at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court, where he admitted guilt to charges of reckless and negligent driving.
The court imposed a fine of R40,000 or a two-year prison sentence, with half of the penalty suspended for five years provided he avoids similar offences during that time.
Siboniso Duma, KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, criticized Nzima’s actions, stressing that professionals, including lawyers, are expected to uphold the law and set an example for others. He called on the Legal Practice Council to respond transparently and ensure accountability among its members when public trust is compromised.
Duma also highlighted that road monitoring across the province is ongoing and warned that traffic enforcement will increase, especially as the festive season approaches.
He reiterated that dangerous driving continues to be a major contributor to road deaths in the region and urged all motorists to respect speed limits to help prevent loss of life.
The case has sparked renewed public debate on professional responsibility and road safety, particularly regarding speeding incidents involving prominent individuals.
