Sifuna Steals The Show as Chants of His Name Dominate Fred Obachi Machoka’s Golden Jubilee Event

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was met with chants of his name as he arrived at a glittering event celebrating veteran journalist Fred Obachi Machoka’s 50 years in the media industry.

The celebration was held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi. Machoka’s milestone drew guests from across the media, political and entertainment circles. Among those invited was Sifuna, who leads the Linda Mwananchi Movement.

In a video shared online, the senator walks into the venue as the crowd erupts in chants of “Sifuna, Sifuna.”

The cheers rose above the music and conversation, and he was greeted by other guests as he made his way in. The clip has attracted wide attention on social media, with many users reading it as a sign of his growing popularity.

Sifuna’s political stock has risen steadily since he parted ways with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where he served as Secretary General.

After his removal from the position, he went on to lead the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which opposed the broad-based government arrangement, and has built a strong following, especially among young Kenyans.

He has since launched his own political party, The Equitable Party, which is expected to be rebranded soon as the Linda Mwananchi Party. The move is widely seen as a vehicle for his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Reception of the kind he received at the Lang’ata event is likely to boost the confidence of his supporters, who believe he is emerging as a major force in the country’s politics.

Still, political observers caution that enthusiastic crowds at social gatherings do not always translate into votes.

Building a national party structure, raising resources and forging alliances will be the real test for Sifuna as the race heats up. For now, however, the chants at Machoka’s celebration offer another snapshot of the senator’s popularity.

The event itself was a moment to honour Machoka’s half-century in journalism, a career that has seen him become a household name in Kenya’s media landscape.
