Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has revealed details of his last communication with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga, saying a bodyguard informed him that the veteran politician had been discharged from hospital and was doing well.

Sifuna made the disclosure during an interview with journalists at his office on Friday, October 9, explaining that their last conversation took place while Oburu was receiving medical attention before travelling to London.

According to the Nairobi senator, he communicated with Oburu through one of his bodyguards, who reassured him that the Siaya senator’s condition had improved and that he had already left hospital.

Sifuna said he wished Oburu well during the exchange and expressed hope that he would recover fully and return to his political responsibilities.

“I think the last time I spoke to him, he was admitted to hospital before he went to London. We spoke to him through one of his bodyguards, who told me that he was okay and had been discharged from hospital, and we wished each other all the best,” Sifuna said.

The ODM secretary-general added that he continued to pray for the party leader’s recovery, noting that his return to work would be important for both the party and the people of Siaya County, whom he represents in the Senate.

“I still want to say that we wish him a speedy recovery so that he can return to work, resume his duties as the leader of ODM and continue serving as the Senator for Siaya County,” Sifuna said.

Oburu’s health has attracted public attention in recent days after his absence from important public events triggered speculation on social media. Some posts went as far as claiming that the veteran politician had died, prompting his office and other ODM leaders to dismiss the reports.

The Oburu Oginga Secretariat has maintained that the party leader is alive, safe and in good spirits. His office has also said that he was advised by doctors to rest and limit strenuous physical engagements as he recovers.

ODM national chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also offered reassurance, saying she had visited Oburu and found him in good spirits.

The family has similarly indicated that the senator is recovering. During the handover ceremony of the mausoleum of the late Raila Odinga at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Oburu’s son, Jaoko Oburu, conveyed his father’s apologies for missing the occasion and said he was getting better.

Jaoko told those attending the ceremony that his father appreciated the prayers and messages of concern he had received during his recovery.

Sifuna’s remarks underline the concern among ODM leaders and supporters over Oburu’s absence from public engagements, particularly as he continues to lead the party while serving as Siaya senator.

The Nairobi senator did not disclose further medical details, but his account of the conversation with Oburu’s bodyguard offered a glimpse into the communication between the two leaders during the period of hospitalisation.

For now, ODM officials and the senator’s family have urged the public to rely on verified updates rather than unconfirmed claims circulating online as Oburu continues his recovery.
