Report: Barcelona versatile defender next in line for contract renewal

According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday October 9, 2026, Barcelona are preparing to secure Gerard Martín’s long-term future, with the versatile defender reportedly next in line for a contract renewal at the club.

According to reports, the Catalan giants have turned their attention to Martín after progressing with other contract extensions, including those involving Xavi Espart, Raphinha and Marc Bernal.

The 24-year-old has become an important option for Hansi Flick since joining the first team during the German manager’s first season at the club. Primarily a left-back, Martín has also impressed in a left-sided centre-back role, forming a reliable partnership with Pau Cubarsí.

Despite experiencing some inconsistent moments, the Spaniard continues to enjoy Flick’s trust, with his versatility making him a valuable asset to the Barcelona squad.

Martín’s current contract runs until the summer of 2028, but Barcelona are reportedly considering extending it until 2030 or 2031. Initial contacts have already taken place between the club and the defender’s representatives.

The player has also made his intentions clear, expressing his desire to remain at Barcelona for many more years.

“I’d be delighted to stay here for a few more years,” Martín recently said, highlighting his commitment to the club.

So far this season, the defender has featured in six of Barcelona’s eight matches across all competitions.

With negotiations reportedly underway, Barcelona will hope to reach an agreement that secures Martín’s future and maintains defensive stability as Flick continues to build his project at the club.
