President Mahama commissions two newly built CHPS Compounds at Ahyiaem/Asuatrekrom
Tanoso (A/R), Oct. 09, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on day one of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Ahafo Region, commissioned two newly built Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) at Ahyiaem and Asuatrekrom, both farming communities in the Tano North Municipality.
A CHPS compound is a primary healthcare facility in Ghana designed to bring basic medical and public health services directly to rural and underserved communities.
President Mahama said the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) allocated by the Government allocates to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), was to facilitate their infrastructure development programme.
He said under the previous administration they used to allocate a small portion of the fund to the MMDAs, leaving the large portion in Accra to award as contracts, which should have been sent directly to the MMDAs for them to decide their own infrastructure development programme.
The President said his administration had decided to allocate 80 per cent of the DACF to the MMDAs for the execution of their infrastructure development programmes such as the building of CHPS Compound facilities and basic schools.
As part of the measures to enhance infrastructure development at the various local levels, the President said he had directed all MMDAs to construct two CHPS Compound facilities and two basic schools annually.
He said under the Free Primary Healthcare Programme, healthcare services would be provided free of charge for all Ghanaians at CHPS Compound facilities.
At the commissioning of the Ahyiaem CHPS Compound facility, the Dormaahemaa Odeneho Dr Akosua Fima Dwaben II, expressed gratitude to the President for the development initiative in the area.
