Prajwal Revanna’s Transfer to Hindalga Jail May Be Decided Today; Lawyers Weigh Legal Challenge
Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar ordered the proposed transfer after the recovery of the prohibited electronic devices triggered concerns over security arrangements at the Bengaluru prison. Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and the nephew of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
The transfer has reportedly been deferred temporarily as the prison department finalises arrangements for moving the high-profile convict. One concern is the absence of a senior police officer to supervise the process following the recent arrest of Belagavi Range Deputy Inspector General Somashekar in a separate case involving alleged misuse of authority and the release of a convict on the basis of a purported fake Supreme Court order.
The transfer may proceed once another officer is assigned responsibility for overseeing the movement. Authorities are also considering the logistical implications of shifting Revanna to Belagavi, as he is produced before a court three times a week.
Meanwhile, his lawyers are reportedly preparing to challenge the proposed transfer in court, citing alleged violations of prison rules and procedural concerns.
The move follows a Central Crime Branch (CCB) raid at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison on August 11, 2026, led by Deputy Commissioners of Police Haribabu and Imam Qasim. During the operation, officials reportedly recovered a mobile phone, a charger, a blue notebook and a pen drive from Revanna’s cell.
The mobile phone was reportedly found to contain applications including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, protected by passwords. A forensic examination by the Forensic Science Laboratory reportedly detected several obscene video files on the device.
A photograph purportedly showing Revanna speaking on a mobile phone inside the prison also surfaced, intensifying questions about how prohibited items had entered the facility.
Following the recovery, Alok Kumar ordered an investigation led by DIG Jinendra Khanagavi to establish how the devices were brought into the prison and whether any officials were negligent.
An official email has reportedly been sent to Hindalga Jail authorities regarding the proposed transfer, and the jail’s chief superintendent has been informed. Arrangements for relocation under police escort are expected to follow once the department takes a final decision.
