PM Modi to Launch Projects Worth Over ₹13,000 Crore in Chennai, Inaugurate New Metro Corridor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch development projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore during his visit to Chennai on Sunday, with major initiatives spanning Metro rail, highways, railway infrastructure, ports, petroleum and scientific research.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the programme will include inaugurations of completed facilities, dedication of projects to the nation and foundation stone-laying ceremonies for new works.

A key highlight will be the inauguration of the ₹4,900-crore Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro’s Phase II. The corridor features a 3.7-km double-decker structure and signalling systems designed to support driverless train operations. It is expected to strengthen connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre.

Modi is scheduled to take a Metro ride between Porur Bypass and Poonamallee Bypass at 11.30 a.m. He will subsequently visit Jalakandeswarar Temple at 12.15 p.m. and tour the Brain Centre at IIT Madras.

Highway projects worth approximately ₹3,700 crore will include the 36-km, four-lane Vadugapatti–Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744 and the 30-km Madurai Ring Road on NH-744A. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on NH-83.

Railway projects valued at more than ₹750 crore will cover the Karaikal–Peralam line and three rail flyovers in and around Coimbatore. Redeveloped railway stations at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal will also be inaugurated.

The port infrastructure programme includes upgraded storage facilities, warehouses, cruise passenger amenities and a Seafarers Club at Chennai Port. Eight projects at V.O. Chidambaranar Port are aimed at strengthening cargo-handling capacity, cleaner maritime energy and logistics. At Kamarajar Port, Modi will inaugurate Coal Berth-3 and launch dredging works.

In the petroleum sector, he will lay the foundation stone for Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s ₹1,620-crore lubricant base stocks project at the Manali refinery. The facility is planned to have an annual production capacity of 270,000 tonnes.

At IIT Madras, Modi will dedicate the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre and launch a mission to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional cellular atlases, covering subjects from foetuses to older adults. He will also release C-STROKE, an atlas containing more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain, intended to help researchers identify potential therapeutic targets.

The main development programme and address are scheduled for 1.30 p.m. Modi will later attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School at 3 p.m.
