(TNND) — Nine people are reported dead, including two children, in a mass shooting in a residential area in Erie, Pa., that took place on Friday night.

The shooter suspected of the mass shooting died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police. Two women were found dead in the street, and the other victims were found dead in the home.

The gunman then barricaded himself inside as police surrounded the building and ordered him to leave, but more gunshots were heard.

Police were called to a home on Perry Street in Erie at around 5 p.m. EST on Friday. Witnesses shared that they had seen a man firing a gun before entering the home.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said that a tragedy of this magnitude is difficult to put into words.

"There are no words that can adequately express the magnitude of the loss of life here," Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said. "Out of respect for the victims and their loved ones, I will not discuss the specific details of what our officers encountered today. Our investigators are working diligently as we speak to establish the full circumstances of what occurred. We will not speculate about a motive or any information that could compromise this investigation."

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro issued a statement confirming the number killed during the incident while offering support to victims' families.

"I’ve spoken with Mayor Devlin and offered my Administration’s full support following the tragic mass shooting in Erie last night — killing nine of our fellow Pennsylvanians," Shapiro wrote in a Saturday morning post on X.

"My heart breaks for this family. Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community," Shapiro said.

On Saturday morning, police confirmed the total number of deaths and said that all of the deaths happened before they arrived.
