PDMA issues rain, thunderstorm alert for Punjab from Oct 10 to 14

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a province-wide weather alert, forecasting rain, strong winds and thunderstorms in most districts from Oct 10 to 14.

A PDMA spokesperson said a westerly weather system was expected to enter the country’s upper regions on Saturday, bringing rain to several parts of Punjab.

Rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is forecast for Oct 10, 11, 13 and 14 in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal and Mianwali.

Faisalabad, Khushab, Bhakkar, Sargodha, Jhang and Toba Tek Singh are expected to receive intermittent rain, strong winds and thunderstorms on Oct 10, 11 and 13.

PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa directed divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain alert, particularly in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas where landslides were possible.

The authority said district administrations had been placed on alert in line with the chief minister’s instructions. The health, irrigation, communications and works, local government and livestock departments were also directed to prepare for possible weather-related emergencies.

DG PDMA urged residents to take precautions during adverse weather and avoid staying in dilapidated or mud-built houses.

People were advised to seek safe shelter during strong winds and storms and avoid unnecessary travel. During thunderstorms, residents should remain indoors or seek suitable shelter and stay away from open areas to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.

Parents were urged to take special care of children and keep them away from low-lying areas, electricity wires and power poles.

The PDMA said its emergency helpline, 1129, could be contacted for assistance. Authorities also urged the public to follow official weather updates and safety instructions throughout the forecast period.
