One cop dead, another in critical condition after being ambushed by Philadelphia gunman

One Philadelphia cop was fatally shot and another is fighting for his life after reportedly being ambushed by a crazed city worker, early Saturday morning.

Cops responded to a call for a man armed with a gun on a porch just after midnight on the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia.

As soon as they stepped onto the porch the cops were ambushed and hit with a hail of gunfire, according to WPVI.

Fox29 One cop, a 33-year-old father of five was shot 12 times, and another officer, a 40-year-old father of two, was shot three times — and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Both officers were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Police have not confirmed which officer was killed.

The alleged shooter has been identified as Eric Lewis, who works for the Philadelphia Water Department, sources told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

He initially fled the scene, continuing to fire off shots at police in a nearby alley and then climbing a tree to hide.

Lewis eventually surrendered to police after a SWAT unit arrived, according to Fox 29.

Officers reportedly recovered three firearms, including two handguns and a shotgun. One of those weapons belonged to a cop.

Mayor Cherelle Parker said she spoke to the families of the victims.

One police officer was fatally shot and another was critically wounded after an ambush attack by a gunman. Fox29 “Their families right now are feeling unspeakable pain but watching this department and those families sticking close together as a village has definitely showed me what the indomitable power of the human spirit is and can mean during times like this,” Parker said at an early Saturday morning press conference.

Parker added in a statement posted to social media: “They put themselves in harm’s way every day, and put their lives on the line – to protect the People of Philadelphia.”

Pennsylvania’s Gov. Josh Shapiro also offered prayers for the victims.

“Lori and I are praying for the two Philadelphia police officers shot in the line of duty early this morning,” Shapiro wrote on social media.

“Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect their fellow Pennsylvanians,” his post continued. “We are grateful for their courage and service, and are hoping for their full and speedy recovery.”

Neither of the victims has been identified.
