My Wife Was Lively When We Spoke On Saturday, But By Sunday Morning, She Had Collapsed —Husband

Moses Ukoh, husband of the late 40-year-old Mary Ugwoma, has denied being responsible for his wife’s death, recounting how she collapsed after returning from church.

In an interview with PUNCH on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Ukoh said he last spoke with his wife around 7pm on Saturday, adding that she sounded well and lively. He explained that he stayed away from home because of work and the difficulty of getting transportation on Sundays.

Ukoh said he received a call from a neighbour between 10am and 11am on Sunday, informing him that his wife had collapsed. He explained that Mary returned from church, dropped her bag at home and went to a nearby shop to buy snacks, which she ate with some people.

Ukoh said he immediately asked the neighbour which hospital they could take her to because she had collapsed before. He added that he and Mary had two children, an 11-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl.

In Ukoh’s words: “I spoke with my wife around 7pm that Saturday. She sounded well and was as lively as usual. Between 10am and 11am on Sunday, after the church service, I received a call from a neighbour and friend who told me that my wife had collapsed. I was told that she returned from church, dropped her bag and went to a shop in front of our house to buy snacks, which she ate with some people.”
