Meet Akwasi Alhassan: The Ghanaian Goalkeeper Who Has Been in Prison Since 1989

Akwasi Alhassan once dreamed of becoming a top goalkeeper for Ghana, but a fatal confrontation with a friend during his teenage years brought his football ambitions to an abrupt end and set him on a path that would keep him behind prison walls for decades.

Alhassan, who was born in Kwesimintsim, a suburb of Takoradi in the Western Region, was regarded as a promising young goalkeeper whose talent could have opened doors to opportunities in Ghanaian football.

His abilities reportedly attracted attention among his peers, and by 1988, he was said to have been involved in the process of assembling Ghana’s first national Under-17 team.

However, his aspirations were derailed in 1989 when a fight with a friend ended in tragedy. The incident, which occurred while he was still a teenager, would have lasting consequences for his life and sporting ambitions.

In an interview with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai in 2025, Alhassan recounted how he struck his friend with a key during the confrontation. His friend was subsequently rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries.

Alhassan spent four years on remand before being convicted of murder and sentenced to death on March 19, 1993.

The conviction marked a dramatic turning point for the young goalkeeper, whose prospects of pursuing a football career were overshadowed by the legal consequences of the fatal incident.

Despite the years that have passed since his incarceration, Alhassan’s footballing abilities remain memorable to some former Ghanaian internationals who knew him during his younger years.

Former Black Stars striker Augustine Ahinful, who played alongside him in their early football days, recalled Alhassan as an exceptionally talented goalkeeper.

Former Ghana international Yaw Preko also spoke highly of his abilities, indicating that Alhassan stood out among goalkeepers of his generation.

The accounts of the two former players offer insight into the potential Alhassan displayed before his life took a different course.

Although it is impossible to determine whether he would have progressed to become a regular member of the Black Stars or established himself as a successful professional footballer, the recollections of his former colleagues suggest that he possessed considerable promise.

Alhassan’s story returned to public attention following a visit by former Ghanaian footballers to Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

The former players interacted with inmates and took part in activities involving members of the prison community, creating an opportunity for engagement between the sporting figures and those serving time behind bars.

Former Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kuffour was among those present at the gathering, where he offered encouragement to the inmates.
