Maurice Ogeta Speaks Out On How Raila Odinga Survived Near Death Gun Attacks

Maurice Ogeta, the longtime personal bodyguard of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, has broken his silence to detail terrifying assassination attempts and his final moments with the veteran politician.

Speaking in an interview nearly a year after Odinga’s passing, Ogeta described how decades of guarding Kenya’s most prominent political figure meant constantly facing the real threat of death.

“It reached a point where I registered in my mind and I could see my boss dead. In fact, it was like we were dead,” Ogeta said.

Recalling one of the most violent attacks on Odinga’s convoy, Ogeta narrated how security officers targeted their vehicle at close range.

He watched as officers repeatedly struck the car’s reinforced windshield until the glass shattered, before opening fire directly into the cabin.

“There was a video that went viral of an officer coming to the windscreen of my boss’ car. That windscreen was hit so many times to a point where it gave in and cracked. After cracking, so many shots were fired in that car,” he recalled.

The situation was so severe that their lead escort commander radioed back in panic, believing the former Prime Minister had been killed in the spray of bullets.

Beyond the tactical battles and violent political rallies, Ogeta spoke of a deep personal relationship that developed over years of shared danger.

He noted that Odinga was far more than an employer, describing him as a father figure, brother, mentor, and close friend.

Ogeta’s account sheds light on the dangerous reality faced by close-protection teams in Kenya’s high-stakes political environment, where loyalty often requires standing directly in the line of fire.
