Malala Warns Sifuna Against Repeating Raila Odinga’s Political Mistakes Ahead of 2027
Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has cautioned Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna against repeating the political mistakes he believes contributed to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s unsuccessful presidential bids.
Malala has urged Sifuna and other opposition leaders to adopt a different political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election, arguing that building alliances across different regions will be crucial in their quest to win the presidency.
Speaking during a public gathering on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Malala reflected on Raila’s extensive political following and argued that popularity alone was not enough to secure victory in a presidential election.
According to Malala, Raila commanded significant support across the country but struggled to secure sufficient backing from the Mount Kenya region, a factor he believes weakened his presidential ambitions.
He warned Sifuna against following a similar political path, insisting that the younger politician must learn from the experiences of previous opposition leaders.
Malala said the opposition needed to change its tactics and develop a broader political strategy capable of attracting voters from different communities.
He also expressed support for efforts to build a political movement around Sifuna, whom he described as one of the leaders at the centre of the emerging opposition campaign.
The former senator also praised Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya for supporting Sifuna’s presidential ambitions instead of concentrating solely on his own political interests.
Malala described Natembeya’s decision as an important step towards unity among younger leaders seeking to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
He argued that leaders from the same political community should avoid unnecessary rivalry, warning that internal divisions could weaken their collective influence in national politics.
Malala also cautioned against a repeat of longstanding political competition involving prominent leaders from the Luhya community, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
He maintained that the emerging generation of politicians should prioritise cooperation rather than allow individual ambitions to undermine their chances of securing influential national positions.
Malala’s remarks come as Sifuna’s political ambitions gain momentum following his unveiling as the leader and presidential candidate of The Equitable Party on October 4, 2026.
The party has emerged as the political vehicle through which Sifuna and his allies intend to pursue their ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The development followed challenges surrounding efforts to establish a political party under the Linda Mwananchi Movement banner.
With the election approaching, questions remain about whether opposition leaders will agree on a common presidential candidate and establish a united campaign.
Malala’s latest remarks highlight the importance of regional alliances, political cooperation and strategic decision-making in the unfolding race.
For Sifuna, the challenge will be to expand his support beyond his existing political base while convincing other opposition leaders that his presidential ambitions can form part of a winning national strategy.
