LA28 Qualifier: Alozie, Kanu Give Falcons First Leg Advantage Against Comoros
Super Falcons of Nigeria were able to crack the defence of stubborn Comoros in the first leg of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifier played at the Remo Stadium, Ikenne, Ogun State, with the two goals coming in the second half.
The Acting Coach of the team, Austin Eguavoen, started with a strong team led by the captain of the team, Rashidat Ajibade, but the home team stood their ground to thwart all efforts by the Nigerian attackers to go into the dressing room after the first half goalless.
Comoros, playing their home game in Nigeria after their stadium was not approved by CAF and FIFA came out for the second half with the hope of maintaining their posture but everything changed just three minutes into the half with Michelle Alozie drawing the first blood for Nigeria.
In the 56th minute, Alozie was at it again. She crashes the box from a low cross but her attempt was parried away by the Comoros goalkeeper to deny the right-back her second goal of the night.
It was however the Houston Dash midfielder that made the game safe after her assist allowed Uchenna Kanu to head home the second goal in the 60th minute.
Kanu’s chance for her second goal of the night came in the 71st minute but her shot from outside the box was tame and well saved by the Comoros goalkeeper.
The Super Falcons are seeking a second consecutive Olympic appearance after returning to the women’s football tournament at Paris 2024, ending a 16-year absence.
The return leg encounter against the Comoros is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at the same Remo Stadium, Ikenne.
