Kennedy Agyapong Accuses NPP of Double Standards Over Campaigning and Disciplinary Actions
New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Kennedy Agyapong has raised concerns about what he describes as unequal treatment of party members who openly endorse and campaign for candidates within the party.
Agyapong, who has repeatedly spoken about the need for peace and unity within the NPP, argued that genuine unity would be difficult to achieve if some party members were allowed to support their preferred candidates publicly while others faced threats and disciplinary action for doing the same.
“I stand for peace and unity, but there can be no unity when some MPs and NPP executives are allowed to openly endorse and campaign for a particular candidate, while others who do the same are threatened and summoned before the Disciplinary Committee,” he stated.
His comments highlight concerns about fairness and consistency in the enforcement of the party’s internal rules, particularly regarding political endorsements and campaign activities.
According to Agyapong’s position, party members should be treated equally regardless of their preferred candidates or political affiliations within the NPP. He suggested that selective disciplinary measures could deepen divisions and create resentment among members at a time when the party needs cohesion.
The comments come amid ongoing political manoeuvring within the NPP as members and leading figures position themselves around competing interests and future leadership ambitions.
The party’s internal dynamics have attracted considerable attention, with questions about candidate endorsements, the conduct of executives and the role of disciplinary structures featuring prominently in discussions about its future.
Agyapong’s remarks suggest that maintaining unity requires more than public appeals for reconciliation. In his view, party leadership must also ensure that its rules are applied consistently and that members are not subjected to different standards because of the candidates they support.
The Disciplinary Committee is an important part of the party’s internal structure, responsible for addressing alleged breaches of party rules. However, concerns about how disciplinary procedures are applied can become contentious when members perceive unequal treatment.
His statement also raises broader questions about the balance between party discipline and the freedom of members to express their political preferences during internal contests.
Whether the concerns will prompt a response from the party’s leadership remains to be seen. Nevertheless, Agyapong’s intervention has brought renewed attention to the challenge of maintaining fairness, trust and unity within the NPP.
For the party, addressing such concerns transparently could be important in managing internal disagreements and preventing further divisions among its members.
