“It Is Disingenuous” – Ablakwa Fires Back at Minority Over Opposition to Ghana Joining BRICS
According to a report by GHOne TV on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has criticised the Minority in Parliament for opposing the government’s move to explore a partnership with BRICS.
Ablakwa described the Minority’s position as disingenuous, arguing that Ghana’s interest in BRICS was also part of the plans pursued by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his time in office.
The minister questioned why members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who served under Akufo-Addo, would oppose the current government’s decision to explore the partnership.
According to Ablakwa, the country’s engagement with BRICS should not be treated as a political issue. Instead, he believes the decision should be considered based on its potential benefits to Ghana and its people.
BRICS is an international grouping that originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The group has since expanded its membership and seeks to strengthen economic cooperation among its members.
Ghana’s interest in exploring a partnership with the group has generated political debate, with members of the Majority and Minority expressing different views on the potential implications of such a move.
The government has indicated its interest in pursuing opportunities that could strengthen Ghana’s economic position and expand its international partnerships.
Ablakwa’s comments suggest that he believes the Minority’s opposition contradicts the approach taken by the previous NPP administration. He has therefore challenged the opposition to explain why it disagrees with a policy direction that he says was also considered under Akufo-Addo.
The debate over Ghana’s potential engagement with BRICS is expected to remain a subject of political discussion as the government continues to consider its international relations and economic priorities.
The development has also renewed attention on the need for political parties to approach major foreign policy decisions with the country’s national interest in mind.
