How I Was Told That My Life Would’ve Been in Danger if I Had Remained In Kano During A Visit–Amaechi

Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, has narrated how he allegedly received information that his life would have been in danger if he had remained in Kano during a political visit, saying he became aware of the warning after arriving safely in Abuja.

During a speech at a gathering of Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign council, Amaechi recalled a journey from Kano to Abuja that he said followed several unsuccessful attempts to leave the state by air. He explained that a security official had advised him to depart immediately because of concerns about his safety.

Speaking about what happened after reaching Abuja, Amaechi said, “When we got to Abuja, we switched on our phones, and that was when I was told that if I hadn’t left, I would have died.”

The former Rivers governor explained that he had initially planned to travel from Kano to Abuja by aircraft. However, he said his journey was interrupted by unfavourable weather conditions, which forced the aircraft to return to Kano shortly after departure.

Amaechi recalled that when the weather eventually improved, airport authorities allegedly refused to permit the aircraft to depart. He explained that attempts to make alternative arrangements through a commercial flight were also unsuccessful, leaving him uncertain about how to leave the state.

According to him, the situation changed when a senior official of the State Security Service arrived at the airport and warned him that his safety could not be guaranteed if he remained in Kano. He said the officer had previously served in Rivers State and was familiar with him.

The former governor explained that the security official helped arrange his departure by road. He said he was concerned about travelling through areas affected by insecurity but eventually agreed to leave Kano because of the warning he had received.

Amaechi recalled that members of his travelling party were instructed to switch off their mobile phones during the journey. He explained that the arrangement meant most people did not know his location, although his wife was aware that he was returning.

He stated that the journey was exhausting, with some of his companions falling asleep as they travelled through Kaduna towards Abuja. According to him, he was also struggling with tiredness by the time they approached their destination.

The former Rivers governor said he later received information suggesting that remaining in Kano could have had serious consequences for his safety.

He maintained that the experience did not discourage him from continuing his political activities against the government then in power, and he shared the account to explain the difficulties he had encountered during that period.
