Herman Mashaba Names Who He Blames for South Africa’s Drug Crime Problem

Activist Herman Mashaba has spoken out following the news of a possible drug lab’s discovery on a farm near Krugersdorp, Gauteng. Five South African nationals were apprehended on the spot.

The raid was carried out by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) and the Crime Intelligence unit of the South African Police Service. Authorities found Mandrax and many ecstasy pills at the scene. The police have taken five people into custody and are continuing their investigation at the spot.

In discussing the problem of organised crime in the country, Mashaba cited the discovery. He said that the GNU was involved in the finding and that foreign drug gangs have seen South Africa as a good place to run their operations ever since the GNU was founded. So far, the police have only dealt with those found at the property when making arrests, and they have not confirmed or denied the story.

A multi-million rand drug lab was raided earlier this week in the Skeerpoort region, near Hartbeespoort Dam, and now the Krugersdorp case is following suit. The four people that were apprehended were the product of that operation. The four firearms seized by the authorities included a rifle and three pistols.

Two raids in as little time have refocused attention on organised drug networks and highlighted the challenge for law enforcement to shut down premises used to produce and distribute illicit substances. The Krugersdorp police have withheld their detailed assessment of the drugs and gadgets discovered there from the public. Future investigations will most certainly uncover the operation’s extent as well as any additional persons associated with it.
