Government Takes New Precautionary Step Following Imported Ebola Case

The Ministry of Health has suspended government meetings, seminars and conferences scheduled to take place in hotels as Kenya strengthens measures to prevent the spread of Ebola virus disease.

A directive was released by Mary Muthoni, the PS for Public Health and Professional Standards, in a memo dated, Wednesday, October, 7, 2026.

The suspension is effective immediately and will remain in effect until further notice.

In the memo, leaders of directorates, divisions, and programs were ordered to cease any scheduled gatherings in hotels as the government focuses on emergency preparedness, contact tracing, and disease management.

Departments wishing to request exceptions to this directive must first receive approval from the Principal Secretary’s office.

The ministry has also encouraged its departments to adhere to established safety protocols while authorities keep track of the situation.

Muthoni On Saturday, October 10, informed that the government is enhancing its vigilance and preparing to address any potential developments.

This decision comes in response to the confirmation of Kenya’s first imported case of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease, involving a Kenyan who had been residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The individual traveled through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi on October 3 and unfortunately passed away on October 5.

Health authorities have since ramped up contact tracing and are closely monitoring individuals who may have come into contact with the patient.

Officials have also bolstered surveillance and screening measures at selected entry points as part of comprehensive containment strategies.

The suspension is yet another precautionary measure by the government aimed at managing the imported case and mitigating the risk of further transmission.
