Go Tell ED It’s Over — The Moment an Extraordinary ZANU-PF Meeting Turned into Immediate Chaos

Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party has reportedly been thrown into fresh uncertainty after an extraordinary Politburo meeting intended to discuss proposed constitutional changes was abandoned following objections from Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga.

According to reports from sources familiar with the meeting, Chiwenga, who also serves as the party’s second secretary, challenged the legality of the proposed amendments, arguing that they were based on changes to Zimbabwe’s national Constitution that he considered unlawful.

The meeting was reportedly convened to discuss amendments to the Zanu-PF constitution aimed at aligning the party’s governing document with the country’s amended national Constitution. However, proceedings allegedly took an unexpected turn before President Emmerson Mnangagwa joined the gathering.

Chiwenga reportedly demanded to inspect the draft amendments held by party secretary-general Advocate Obert Mpofu’s counterpart, identified in the account as Mudenda. He allegedly maintained that the party should not proceed with constitutional changes whose legal foundation remained disputed.

Sources further claim that Chiwenga confronted the proposed amendments in the presence of other Politburo members, including First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa. He reportedly warned against changing the party constitution through a process he believed mirrored the controversial manner in which the national Constitution had been amended.

The disagreement reportedly intensified when Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi argued that the changes to the national Constitution were based on resolutions adopted at Zanu-PF conferences.

Chiwenga allegedly challenged that explanation, demanding to see the 21 party resolutions said to have formed the basis for the 21 changes introduced through Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, commonly referred to as CAB3 in the account.

He reportedly insisted that the proposed party constitutional changes should not be discussed until the concerns surrounding their legal basis had been addressed.

According to the account, Chiwenga then instructed Mudenda to inform Mnangagwa that he opposed proceeding with the amendments. Mudenda allegedly went to the President’s office at Zanu-PF headquarters, where the meeting was being held.

Mnangagwa subsequently called for the meeting to be abandoned, the sources claimed.

If confirmed, the reported confrontation could highlight growing disagreements within Zimbabwe’s governing party over constitutional reform, internal decision-making and the direction of its leadership.

However, the specific claims about the meeting, the exchanges between senior officials and the reasons for its abandonment require independent confirmation. No official statement confirming the reported confrontation has been established from the information provided.

For now, attention is likely to remain focused on whether Zanu-PF will revisit the proposed amendments and how the party’s senior leadership will resolve the reported disagreement.
