Officers responding to a residence on Robin Lane in the Touchton Woods neighborhood around 11:09 p.m. discovered five individuals who appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds, Pruette said. Four were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fifth was transported to a local hospital where they were later pronounced deceased, according to Pruette. Pruette confirmed earlier reports that the incident was the result of an apparent murder-suicide and said officials will not be publicly identifying the victims or family at this time. "First and foremost, I extend our deepest condolences to the families affected. No words can adequately express the sorrow surrounding such a tragedy," Mayor Tony Paulk said during the press conference. "Please know that the city of Douglas stands ready, and we ask our community to surround you with compassion, prayer, and respect during this difficult time, Douglas is more than a city. We are neighbors, friends, and a community that stands together, especially in times of tragedy." Paulk noted that the incident was heartbreaking since it occurred in October, which is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Douglas is in Coffee County in southern Georgia, about 115 miles northwest of Jacksonville, Florida. It has a population of about 11,864, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s July 2025 estimate. Newsweek reached out to DPD and the Coffee County Sheriff’s office by email Saturday for more information. Rash of Mass Shootings The deaths come after several recent incidents involving multiple shooting victims in Georgia and a mass shooting Friday night in Erie, Pennsylvania, that saw the death of nine people, including two children. The Gun Violence Archive (GVA) defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are shot, either injured or killed, excluding the shooter. The Coffee County deaths marked the third consecutive weekend in which Georgia authorities had reported a mass shooting or other incident of multi-victim gun violence. A shooting at a homecoming celebration in Vienna, Georgia, about 80 miles northwest of Douglas, left two people dead and another 35 injured last weekend. The shooting began at about 1:25 a.m. at a neighborhood party spanning four blocks. A separate shooting at an 18th birthday party at Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon on September 27 injured 12 teenagers. Five suspects had been charged in connection with that shooting at the time of its report, including a 15-year-old who was charged as an adult, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Macon is about 60 miles north of Vienna and about 115 miles north of Douglas. What Happens Next Officials urged anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators. Identities of the deceased are expected to be released once notification of next of kin is completed, officials said. Pruett said that the bodies of the deceased are going to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) for completion of autopsies. There is no further threat to the community, Pruett added.
