Farmers asked to stop harvesting due to high number of grass fires in the area
HINTON, Iowa (KTIV) – Due to the high number of grass fires throughout Siouxland, Fire departments in the area are asking farmers to stop harvesting for the day.
âDue to the high number of grass fires currently impacting departments throughout the area, we are asking everyone to suspend harvesting operations for the remainder of today and resume tomorrow,â said Hinton Fire and EMS on Facebook.
Firefighters say almost every department in the area is on grass fires at the moment due to multiple combines igniting fires in multiple locations.
âIf you are currently doing any sort of field work please STOP! We currently have two large field fires going on in Wayne County,â said Wayne County Volunteer Fire Department.
Pierce Fire and Rescue is asking residents to have a tank of water and a fire extinguisher ready to go if they are in the field. The department also encourages farmers to have a disc hooted up and ready to go as well.
âIf even a small fire starts, please do not hesitate to call 911 as a small fire can travel great distances in this wind!â said Pierce Fire and Rescue.
