Expert Reveals 5 Fluffy Cat Breeds That Could Easily Pass for Maine Coons

0With their impressive size, luxurious coats and playful personalities, Maine Coons are gentle giants that are hard for cat lovers to resist. They’re also known for being intelligent, affectionate companions who enjoy spending time with their families. So it’s no surprise why they are so adored by people.

But you don’t have to bring home a Maine Coon to find a cat with similar qualities. From other large fluffy cat breeds to cats with tufted ears and laidback lap cats, there are actually several feline breeds that share their endearing traits and features. So if you’re thinking about getting a furry companion, you may be curious what cat breeds look like Maine Coons?

We asked Dr. Nita Vasudevan, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, to highlight five cats that remind her of a Maine Coon. Check out which ones made her list so you can see if one of them is perfect for you.

Meet the Maine Coon’s fluffy cousin! With a thick coat, sturdy build and playful personality, the Norwegian Forest Cat has plenty in common with this beloved breed.

“Both are large, muscular and long-haired,” Vasudevan says. “They’re also intelligent, playful and affectionate, although Norwegian Forest Cats tend to be a little more independent than the very people-oriented Maine Coon.”

If your favorite thing about Maine Coons is their fluffy coat and adventurous spirit, the Siberian might be your new best friend. These agile felines love to keep their families entertained and will instantly win you over.

“Siberians are fluffy cats with a thick coat and a playful personality,” Vasudevan says. “These Maine Coon alternative cat breeds tend to be intelligent, social and very involved with their families. They’re also athletic cats that often enjoy climbing and exploring.”

Looking for a big cat who wants to be at your side? Ragdolls share the Maine Coon’s affectionate nature, making them a wonderful match for anyone who wants a devoted feline sidekick.

“They’re large and known for being incredibly people-oriented,” Vasudevan explains. However, even though they are similar when it comes to their appearance, there are a couple differences potential pet parents should know as they aren’t as playful and energetic. “Ragdolls tend to be calmer and more relaxed than Maine Coons,” Vasudevan points out.

Personality: Loving, intelligent, relaxed

Think of the Ragamuffin as a cuddly, plush-coated variation of the Maine Coon. These robust, long-haired cats have a gentle personality and love being part of the action at home.

“They have a substantial build and a reputation for being sweet and very people-focused,” Vasudevan explains. In fact, she says these cats have dog-like personalities, just like Maine Coons do. “They generally enjoy being part of whatever their family is doing rather than being completely independent cats.”

Not every Maine Coon look-alike is a giant fluffball. That’s where Birmans come in. These felines are a smaller cat breed with a distinct appearance, but their gentle, sociable personalities make them a natural fit for families.

“For someone who loves the Maine Coon’s family-friendly temperament, but doesn’t necessarily need the giant size or shaggy appearance, a Birman can be a great alternative,” Vasudevan reveals.

Therefore, if you’re more a fan of their overall personality and not necessarily their big cat build, a Birdman could be just what you’re after.

Personality: Gentle, social, affectionate
