Edwin Sifuna: Why He Quit a KSh 400,000 Salary Job After Working Under a ‘Boss From Hell’

Edwin Sifuna’s journey to becoming one of Kenya’s prominent politicians was marked by difficult beginnings, career challenges and a bold decision to walk away from a lucrative job.

After graduating with a law degree, Sifuna struggled to secure employment and spent 19 months jobless in Nairobi. During that period, he lived in a bedsitter in South B and accumulated six months of rent arrears. His fortunes eventually changed when he secured a job as a lawyer at Supa Loaf, earning KSh 40,000 per month.

He later moved to an advertising company, where he was appointed to oversee legal affairs. The position came with a managerial title, a company car and a salary of KSh 150,000, allowing him to upgrade to a three-bedroom house.

However, the attractive package came with what Sifuna described as a difficult working environment. He recalled that his boss would sometimes call him in the middle of the night with tasks that needed immediate attention.

Despite the pressure, Sifuna continued working and by 2013, his monthly salary had risen to KSh 400,000. But the money could not compensate for the toll the job was taking on him.

He eventually made the bold decision to resign and establish his own law firm. Rather than chasing another high paying job, he set himself a modest target of earning KSh 50,000 a month, which he considered enough to sustain himself.

His gamble quickly paid off. Within less than two weeks, he had already reached his target as demand for legal services grew amid increased land transactions, chama formations, company registrations and tender applications.

With greater control over his time, Sifuna gradually turned his attention to politics, a move that would eventually transform him from a lawyer into a prominent political figure.
