Chairman Buga Breaks Silence on Why He Refused to Fight Azorka at Akwatia
Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) 3rd Vice Chairman Alhaji Massawudu Osman, popularly known as Chairman Buga, has explained why he chose not to physically retaliate against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 1st Vice Chairman, Alhaji Sofo Azorka, during their confrontation at the Akwatia by-election.
The two political figures were involved in a physical and verbal altercation at the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025, an incident that attracted public attention and sparked discussions about political tensions between members of the two parties.
Speaking about the encounter, Chairman Buga maintained that he was capable of standing his ground against Azorka but deliberately refrained from responding physically because of his upbringing and royal background.
He explained that his values and the discipline instilled in him while growing up in a responsible family prevented him from engaging in conduct he considered inappropriate, regardless of the provocation he faced.
“Everybody knows that Azorka cannot push me on the floor; even if I’m dead, he cannot, because I am a Dagomba and a royal as well. I have been brought up in a responsible home, so I won’t go into the gutters with Azorka if he chooses to misbehave,” he said.
Chairman Buga also expressed concern about the frequent political disagreements among people from northern Ghana, arguing that such conflicts could undermine efforts to promote development in the region.
He questioned why political figures from the north appeared to engage in confrontations when people from other parts of the country who occupy prominent positions were able to coexist without similar public disputes.
According to him, continued hostility among northerners could divert attention from important development priorities and leave the region struggling to make progress.
The former NPP executive further explained that retaliating against Azorka could have damaged his public image and brought criticism upon him, even if he believed he had been provoked first.
He maintained that his royal upbringing had taught him to exercise restraint and protect the reputation of his family rather than allow a confrontation to dictate his actions.
“You all saw how he attempted to slap me. If I had slapped him back, people would have blamed me, but since I have been brought up well in a royal family, I won’t destroy my reputation because of Azorka,” he noted.
Chairman Buga made the comments during an interview on Sagani TV, monitored by MyNewsGh.com, while responding to claims that his encounter with Azorka at Akwatia may have contributed to his defeat at the NPP’s recent National Congress.
