Breaking: Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended From Portugal National Team

According to a report by Fabrizio Romano on Saturday, October 10, 2026, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo and imposed a provisional suspension on the Portugal captain following his departure from the national team’s training camp.

The development comes amid a reported disagreement between the 41-year-old forward and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus after Ronaldo left the squad’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of an international fixture.

The federation’s disciplinary council confirmed that the matter had been referred for investigation and that a provisional suspension had been imposed while the proceedings continue. Further details remain confidential pending the conclusion of the process.

The controversy reportedly began after Ronaldo remained an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27. The veteran striker claimed there had been an understanding regarding his playing time as part of a plan to manage his fitness, but he was not introduced despite warming up during the encounter.

Ronaldo subsequently accused Jesus of failing to honour promises on two occasions. According to the forward, the coach did not respect their agreement concerning his playing time and later failed to provide clarifications they had discussed ahead of a press conference.

Jesus, however, had previously denied that there was a breakdown in his relationship with the Portugal captain.

On September 30, Ronaldo announced his departure from the national team camp following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation. His decision sparked further questions about his relationship with the coaching staff and his future with the national team.

On Tuesday, October 6, the Al-Nassr forward addressed the controversy in a lengthy public statement, apologising to his teammates and the Portuguese public for leaving the camp. He accepted responsibility for his actions and urged the federation to discipline him without granting him special treatment.

“I am not just an ordinary player; I am the captain of the team, and that is an aggravating factor,” Ronaldo said.

Despite the dispute, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner insisted that he had no intention of retiring from international football. He maintained that he would remain available for Portugal after serving any suspension, provided he was physically fit and continued playing at club level.

The disciplinary case could affect Ronaldo’s availability for Portugal’s forthcoming international fixtures, depending on the final decision reached by the federation.

Under the FPF’s disciplinary regulations, leaving a national team camp without justification can reportedly result in a suspension ranging from one to six months, alongside a possible financial penalty.

However, the provisional suspension does not determine the final punishment, which will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
