Atiku Criticizes Tinubu’s Planned Fuel Price Reduction, Raises Questions Over Policy Approach

Former Nigerian Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his decision to introduce a fuel price reduction within the next 30 days.

The statement was made public on Friday, October 9, 2026, by Abdul Rasheeth, Atiku Abubakar’s Special Adviser on Media, through his official X account.

The criticism followed the Tinubu administration’s announcement of a fuel discount for customers purchasing petrol at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) filling stations.

Reacting to the development, Atiku accused the president of adopting a policy idea without properly understanding or implementing its underlying principles.

According to the former vice president, Tinubu had borrowed an idea from him but failed to grasp the lesson behind it. He used a classroom analogy to express his displeasure with the president’s approach.

“Bola, you are like a dull student who copied his classmate’s answer so blindly that he copied the classmate’s name at the top of his exam paper and then demanded marks for original thinking.”

His remarks have brought renewed attention to the policy differences between the two political figures, particularly regarding fuel pricing and the government’s approach to addressing the cost of petroleum products in Nigeria.
