Arsenal fight back to beat Leeds United as Calafiori and Guimarães seal comeback victory
The victory provided Mikel Arteta’s side with a much-needed response following their 3–0 defeat to Brighton before the international break. Leeds, who arrived unbeaten in the league, made life difficult for the hosts but were unable to hold on after taking the lead.
Arsenal dominated possession during the first half but struggled to turn their control into clear-cut chances. Leeds defended with discipline and threatened on the counter-attack, creating several promising opportunities.
The visitors’ persistence paid off in the 55th minute when James Justin finished from close range after Gabriel Gudmundsson’s pull-back from the byline.
Justin’s strike rewarded Leeds for their organised performance and put Arsenal under immediate pressure to respond.
Riccardo Calafiori made it 1–1 in the 62nd minute, finishing from close range after Ben White directed the ball back into the penalty area.
The goal shifted the momentum towards the home side, who began to find more space and create better attacking opportunities.
Arteta then made a triple substitution, introducing Jurrien Timber, Bruno Guimarães and Viktor Gyökeres as Arsenal sought to complete the turnaround.
The changes paid off in the 70th minute when Guimarães scored the decisive goal.
The Brazilian midfielder finished a well-constructed team move, with Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice involved in the build-up, firing a low shot into the bottom corner to put Arsenal 2–1 ahead.
The goal capped an effective second-half response from Arsenal, who had struggled to break Leeds down before the interval.
Leeds refused to give up and continued to search for a way back into the contest during stoppage time.
Arsenal, however, survived the late pressure and held on for all three points. Viktor Gyökeres had an opportunity to extend the lead in the closing moments but failed to convert after breaking through on goal.
Despite the defeat, Leeds showed that their unbeaten start had not been built on defensive organisation alone, creating chances that could have produced a different result.
The victory gives Arsenal renewed momentum as the Premier League campaign continues. Their ability to respond after conceding will be encouraging for Arteta, particularly after the disappointment of the Brighton defeat.
For Leeds manager Daniel Farke, the result will be frustrating after his team had competed strongly for much of the match. Their challenge now is to turn promising performances into points as the season progresses.
Full-time: Arsenal 2–1 Leeds United
• Arsenal: Riccardo Calafiori 62′, Bruno Guimarães 70′
