Arsenal Beat Leeds United 2-1 as Bruno Guimarães Inspires Second Half Comeback

Arsenal produced a dramatic second half comeback to defeat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, recovering from James Justin’s opener before Bruno Guimarães scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute.

The Gunners entered the match looking to respond after Brighton thrashed Arsenal 3-0 on September 19, ending their perfect start to the campaign. Mikel Arteta’s side initially struggled against an organised Leeds team that pressed aggressively and created several dangerous opportunities.

Despite Arsenal dominating possession, Leeds threatened through Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Gabriel Gudmundsson. David Raya made important saves to keep the hosts in the contest, while James Trafford denied Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard at the other end.

Leeds took the lead in the 55th minute when James Justin finished with his right foot following excellent work from Noah Okafor and an assist from Gudmundsson.

Arsenal responded seven minutes later. Ben White supplied the assist, and Riccardo Calafiori volleyed home to restore parity and ignite the Emirates crowd.

Arteta introduced Bruno Guimarães, Viktor Gyökeres and Jurriën Timber in the 63rd minute. The substitution proved decisive as Guimarães found the net in the 70th minute, finishing a move involving Ødegaard and Declan Rice.

Arsenal pushed for another goal late on, but Saka’s stoppage-time effort was saved by Trafford. The Gunners held on to secure all three points.

The victory offered a response to the Brighton humiliation, when Arsenal suffered their heaviest Premier League defeat since losing 3-0 to the same opponents in May 2023.

Man of the Match: Bruno Guimarães (8.5/10)

The substitute changed the game with his energy and decisive winning goal.
