Alia:He Has Been Suspended; He Goes Around Wearing Roman Catholic Collar,There’s No Problem-Onaiyekan
Cardinal John Onaiyekan has said that Father Hyacinth Alia’s reported suspension from the Catholic Church does not prevent him from wearing a Roman Catholic clerical collar, adding that Nigerians cannot be stopped from dressing the way they choose.
Onaiyekan made this statement during an interview on SYMFONI TV on Friday, October 9, 2026, while discussing Alia’s transition from the priesthood to politics and the disciplinary action reportedly taken against him by his Bishop.
The Cardinal explained that although Alia could continue wearing the clerical collar, his choice of clothing did not change the reported status of his suspension from the Church. He stressed that wearing the traditional outfit should not be confused with whether someone remains authorised to function as a Catholic priest.
Speaking during the interview, Onaiyekan said, “He has been suspended. That he goes around wearing Roman Catholic Collar, there is no problem. You cannot stop Nigerians from dressing the way they like.”
His remarks followed his earlier revelation that Alia’s Bishop had opposed his decision to enter partisan politics and warned that he would be suspended if he proceeded with his governorship ambition.
According to Onaiyekan, Alia went ahead with his political plans despite the Bishop’s position, resulting in the reported suspension. The Cardinal also questioned whether it was appropriate to continue addressing Alia as Father in light of the disciplinary action.
