Actor Imran Khan, Girlfriend Lekha Washington Detained at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan During Protest Crackdown

Actor Imran Khan was detained by Mumbai Police at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday as authorities moved to prevent a planned demonstration in support of a protest in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Speaking to the media, Imran clarified that he was not representing any organisation and had no personal demands.

“Sir, I don’t have any demands. I don’t have any status to demand anything from people. Nor am I a part of any organization, so I don’t speak as a representative,” the actor said.

Shortly after being detained, the Delhi Belly actor shared a photograph on his official Instagram account from inside a police van. He accompanied it with the humorous caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”

Imran’s girlfriend, actor Lekha Washington, was also detained. In a video recorded inside the police vehicle, she informed her followers that they had been taken into custody and said she did not know where the police were taking them.

“Folks, we have been detained. We are all in a cop car. I am going to send the pin. Can you please follow that? I have no idea where we are going. Let’s hope for the best,” Washington said in the video.

Imran’s cousin, actor Zayn Khan, who was also present at the protest site, shared a video drawing a humorous comparison between the actor’s debut film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and his current situation. In the film, Imran’s character is also arrested by the police.

The demonstration was reportedly scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan under the banner of Hum Bharat Ke Log (We, the People of India). It was intended to express support for the movement at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

However, before the protest could begin, Mumbai Police imposed heightened security measures at the venue and in surrounding areas. Barricades were erected at several locations, while roads leading to August Kranti Maidan were closed.

Police also detained people who arrived at the site to participate in the planned demonstration, effectively preventing the gathering from proceeding as scheduled.
