2027: I Want Us To Know We Agreed In Kaduna In 1999 That Power Rotates Between North And South-Akume

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has reminded Nigerians from the North of the agreement reached in Kaduna in 1999 to ensure power rotates between the northern and southern parts of the country, with each region spending eight years in the presidency.

Akume made the statement during a North-Central grassroots rally organised in support of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, the SGF urged northerners to consider the power rotation arrangement reached at the time.

According to Akume, although Nigerians from the North share a common regional identity, the political understanding reached at the end of military rule should remain an important consideration in discussions about the country’s leadership.

He said, β€œAll of us are northerners but again I want us to take one thing into consideration. That we agreed in Kaduna in 1999 to ensure that power rotates between the north and the south. 8 years in the south, 8 years in the north.”

The statement comes amid political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election, with questions surrounding regional representation, presidential succession and the informal power-sharing arrangement between northern and southern Nigeria expected to remain part of the debate.
