Govt forces say Operation Dawn of Yemen targets Houthi positions across multiple fronts
Yemeni government forces have claimed to have neutralised 1,370 Houthi fighters in 1,729 military strikes under the ongoing āDawn of Yemenā operation, as the internationally recognised government seeks to regain territory and end the rebelsā control.
The Yemeni Armed Forces said on Thursday that the operation targeted Houthi military positions across several fronts, using modern weapons and a range of military assets. The forces also reported destroying or damaging 300 vehicles, pieces of equipment and other military assets, although the figures could not be independently verified.
Yemeni army spokesman Staff Colonel Majid Al-Nuzaili said the 1,729 targeting operations focused on military installations and positions belonging to the Houthi group.
According to Al-Nuzaili, the targets included observation posts, frontline command-and-control centres, weapons depots, supply points, reinforcement hubs and other military sites.
Arab media reports said the operations involved fighter jets, drones, artillery, missiles and rocket launchers. The Yemeni military described the weapons used as āmodern qualitative weaponsā and said the strikes were conducted across different operational axes and fronts.
Fierce clashes were reported in Taiz, Khubub, Marib and Al-Jawf, among other areas.
In the Al-Waziāiyah district, Yemeni government forces reportedly captured strategic hills surrounding Al-Mansoura. They also advanced towards the vital highway linking Marib with the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa.
The military campaign targeted Houthi strongholds, including checkpoints, command-and-control centres, arms depots, ballistic missile storage facilities and locations used to coordinate logistics and reinforcements.
The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemenās internationally recognised government said 100 fighter jets participated in the operation against Houthi positions.
Government forces have also reported advances in southwestern Yemen, including areas around the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major maritime passage connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
The offensive follows Houthi territorial advances in September, when the group seized the strategic port city of Mokha and Mayyun Island, which overlooks the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The latest operation is part of a broader effort by Yemenās government and its allies to reverse those gains and regain control of strategically important territory.
Yemenās Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced the launch of Operation Dawn of Yemen on October 5, saying it aimed to restore state institutions, end Houthi control and activate all military fronts.
The stated objectives also include retaking the capital, Sanaa, which has remained under Houthi control since the group seized the city in September 2014.
The operation represents an escalation in the governmentās military campaign against the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, with forces seeking to reclaim territory and strengthen the authority of the internationally recognised government.
Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the Houthis captured Sanaa in September 2014. The takeover prompted a Saudi-led military coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognised government.
The fighting has continued to shape the countryās security and political landscape, with control of strategic cities, supply routes and the Red Sea coastline remaining central to the conflict.
The renewed offensive comes as government forces seek to counter Houthi advances and restore control over key areas, particularly around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
While Yemeni military authorities have reported significant losses among Houthi fighters and equipment, the claimed figures of 1,370 fighters neutralised and 300 military assets destroyed or damaged have not been independently verified.
