World Weather Agency Reveals Exactly When Strong El Niño Rains Will Hit Kenya

A weather warning has put Kenya on alert after the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said El Niño is strengthening rapidly and could peak in December 2026.

The warning has raised fears of heavy rainfall, flooding and extreme weather across Kenya and parts of the Greater Horn of Africa.

According to the WMO’s latest update released on Thursday, October 8, El Niño is expected to intensify before reaching its forecast peak in December. Sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific are projected to rise to about 3.7°C above normal during October to December.

That would be far above the previous high of about 2.6°C recorded during the 2015–2016 El Niño, making the event one of the strongest recorded since 1950.

For Kenya, the warning is important because El Niño can significantly alter rainfall patterns. Earlier WMO regional outlooks indicated a higher likelihood of wetter-than-normal conditions across parts of the Greater Horn of Africa, including Kenya, during the October-December rainfall season.

The increased rainfall could benefit water supplies, agriculture and pasture, but excessive rain also carries serious risks. Flooding can destroy crops, damage roads and homes, disrupt transport and threaten lives.

Kenyan authorities have been preparing for possible emergencies, with security and response agencies expected to support rescue operations in areas affected by heavy rains and flooding.

The WMO also expects El Niño to remain into early 2027, meaning its effects could continue for months. Many people were left talking after the forecast, while the incident sparked reactions online.

Supporters appeared divided, with some viewing increased rainfall as good news for farmers and others fearing another difficult flood season.

What happened next surprised many as attention shifted from the forecast to how prepared Kenya is for the impact.

Do you think Kenya is prepared for the December El Niño peak?
