We will sign a pact with Bawumia – Hawa Koomson on women’s appointments
NPP National Women’s Organiser Mavis Hawa Koomson says the party will seek a formal agreement with NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to ensure more women benefit from government appointments if the party wins the 2028 elections.
Hawa Koomson said unlike the NDC’s alleged verbal assurance on women’s appointments, the NPP would seek a binding commitment from Bawumia.
“NDC made the promise, but there was no binding document. It was just a verbal assurance. So that will be the difference with us. We will sign the pact with Dr Bawumia,” she said on Adom FM.
She said Bawumia had already promised to allocate 10 appointments in every constituency if elected president in 2028.
“He has already promised that when elected as president in 2028, in every constituency, he will give 10 appointments,” she said on Adom FM’s Burning Issues.
Hawa Koomson said the NPP would seek clarity on how many of those positions would be given to women and ensure the commitment is honoured.
“So we would ask how many of these appointments will go to women. It’s as simple as ABC, and we would make sure he delivers,” she added.
She said giving women a meaningful voice in government would remain a priority.
“We must make sure the voices of women will be heard,” she said.
Hawa Koomson also expressed disappointment over the failure of the two women who contested positions in the NPP’s recent national executive elections to win.
“I was sad and pained that the women who contested the recent NPP national executive elections didn’t win,” she said.
She said she had hoped at least one of the two would join her in the party’s national leadership.
“They were just two, and I was hoping that at least one of them would join me because when women are in charge, they do things and do it well,” she said.
However, Hawa Koomson said she was confident that the party’s leadership would create opportunities for more women to serve in key positions.
“But I know leadership is putting in place measures for us to get some women on board to work with,” she said.
