Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ prison time extended as reports detail alleged lavish perksSydney Sweeney has often drawn comparisons to Marilyn Monroe, from her blonde bombshell image to her red-carpet fashion. Now, the two actresses have something in common that goes beyond their Hollywood glamour: they are distant relatives.
According to genealogical research conducted by MyHeritage, Sweeney and Monroe are ninth cousins once removed. The discovery adds a surprising family link to two women whose names have become associated with a similar style and screen presence, despite belonging to different generations.
The connection between the two actresses traces back to Ezra Perry, an English settler who lived in the 17th century and was among the early inhabitants of Sandwich, Massachusetts.
The research followed their respective family lines, linking Sweeney through her father, Steven Sweeney, and Monroe through her biological father, Charles Stanley Gifford. Although the connection is distant, it establishes a shared branch in their family trees.
The family connection comes as little surprise to those who have noticed the similarities between the actresses’ fashion choices. Sweeney has worn several outfits that recall Monroe’s signature Hollywood look, adding to the comparisons that have followed her throughout her career.
In February, Sweeney attended the Santa Barbara International Film Festival wearing a cream, off-the-shoulder Ceil Chapman gown reminiscent of the dress Monroe wore on the cover of LIFE magazine in 1952.
She also brought Monroe’s glamour to the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of The Housemaid, choosing a white halter gown by Galia Lahav that recalled the famous white dress Monroe wore in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. The discovery does not change the actresses’ very different careers, but it gives their long-standing resemblance another layer. What once appeared to be a connection based on appearance and style now has a genealogical link to match.
